Privacy
This site is a portfolio for a small research organization. It is not an advertising business, and there is nothing here that would be improved by knowing who you are.
What is collected
Every request records a small set of facts that Cloudflare, which serves this site, works out at its network edge:
- Approximate location — country, region, city, and postal code — estimated from your network address. These are estimates at the level of a city, not your position.
- Your network operator and its network number, and which data centre answered you.
- Characteristics of the connection and the browser: protocol version, TLS version, language preference, and the user-agent string.
- The page requested, and a random identifier for that one request.
What is not collected
These are the specific things this site does not do, and they are the part worth reading:
- Your IP address is never stored. Not in full, not shortened, not hashed. The location estimates above are derived at the edge, so the useful signal exists without the address ever reaching storage.
- No cookies are set for analytics, and no identifier is stored in your browser. Nothing follows you between visits or between sites.
- No third-party analytics or advertising services. No Google Analytics, no advertising pixels, no session recording, no mouse or scroll tracking.
- No attempt is made to identify you, and no profile is built.
Precision, honestly
Location comes from network-address geolocation, which resolves to the centre of a city or a service area. Coordinates are deliberately rounded to about a kilometre before being stored. Everyone on the same network in the same place looks identical in this data, which is the intent.
Automated traffic
Each request is labelled as likely-automated or likely-human from the network it arrived on and the shape of its headers. It is a rough guess used to keep crawler traffic from overwhelming the counts, and it is frequently wrong in both directions.
How long it is kept
Request data expires automatically after three months. Diagnostic logs are kept for a few days. Neither is renewed or archived.
If you write to me
The contact form asks for your email address and an optional message, and records which question you came in on. It is sent to an inbox and used to reply to you. It is not added to a mailing list and not shared.
